How Can I Really Sell Sugar to Egypt?

June 14th, 2008 at 12:31pm Under Main Content

Chances are, if you’ve made it to this site, you’re involved, or thinking of becoming involved in the wildly lucrative sales of metric tons of sugar, or other commodities that are actually traded between suppliers and recipients.

And it’s quite possible that you have fielded some strange calls with some strange folks in strange countries you’ve never heard of before.  Or maybe not.

The fact is that the business around commodity trading - the sales of the actual goods in this case - is just like any other business that has the potential to make someone wealthy, overnight: it is surrounded by mystery.

If you have spread your name or company name around commodity trading bulletin boards, and have a fax machine number listed, no doubt you have received quite a bit of proforma invoices that appear to be legitimate.  And some could be.

But before you get too excited about the whole process and what may happen if the sale actually is made by you, we’d like to set you straight about a few things in this commodity buying and selling business.

First of all - most transactions are done between companies that have been trading with each other for decades.  Farms and coops throughout the world have developed partnerships at times with the buyers of their goods.

Secondly, commodity companies, such as sugar from Brazil or gold from some strange place in Africa, are held by - for the most part - families, or small groups of businesspeople who only work with a select number of traders.

And what about intermediaries?

Some exist - but the number is actually really small.  And if you have no experience it is not likely someone is going to funnel their transaction through your small company.

But there is hope, and we intend to show here how you can actually make a living with this.  We don’t make any promises and you probably won’t follow our advice and will probably keep trying to do what you’re doing.  We’ve been there and we’ve done that.
